Building The Future

This is some nice footage by VTN Consulting while they are able to display the underground infrastructure of Las Vegas via augmented reality through the use of Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler.
“Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler software for urban planning design helps civil engineering, transportation, and urban planning professionals create, evaluate, and communicate infrastructure proposals. Infrastructure Modeler can help to drive stakeholder buy-in and inform decision making with visually rich proposals for transportation, land, water, and energy infrastructure projects.”
The project was initiated while the city of Las Vegas were fed up by all the inconsistencies in data of the city’s plans, which caused a total waste of time and money each time some parts needed to be maintained or updated. It was like finding a treasure.
“It’s frustrating to obtain survey and other information for subsurface utilities for a project only to have to revisit the area again six or seven years later for a new project and start all over again. We wanted a working 3D model of the existing infrastructure — not an archive, but a living model that could serve as an up-to-date source of information for planning, designing, and maintenance.”
The city hired then VTN Consulting to realize such a 3D model with the help of BIM. At the moment they nearly finished the whole project and the possibilities gained by maintaining a 3D model of the city’s infrastructure are nearly endless. Augmented reality is just one part of it.
